You are in the water when it rises, close enough to see the sun come through the face of it. There is a half-second where the whole thing is lit from behind and utterly still — and then it is not. This is that half-second.

This series is printed on canvas, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a default. The work was conceived as painting — built in thick passages and thin scraped washes — and a woven surface holds that the way a flat sheet cannot. Light catches the weave unevenly, the way it does on a real canvas, so the piece stops reading as a reproduction and starts reading as an object.
