Four posts and a roof of dry palm, holding a square of shade against all that brightness. It asks for nothing and it has stood through more weather than we have. There is a kind of dignity in being just enough.

This series is printed on canvas, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a default. The work was conceived as painting — built in thick passages and thin scraped washes — and a woven surface holds that the way a flat sheet cannot. Light catches the weave unevenly, the way it does on a real canvas, so the piece stops reading as a reproduction and starts reading as an object.
