The tree is not in the picture. Only what it does to the light — a dark hand opened across the sand, moving too slowly to see. Some things are easier to recognise by the shape of their absence.

This series is printed on canvas, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a default. The work was conceived as painting — built in thick passages and thin scraped washes — and a woven surface holds that the way a flat sheet cannot. Light catches the weave unevenly, the way it does on a real canvas, so the piece stops reading as a reproduction and starts reading as an object.
